Kick-off PIFF 2024 with our Opening Ceremony, A Celebration of Dances From the Pacific Islands, hosted by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The event is free to attend and is open to the public.
In this screening, two short films showcase Pacific Island dance and culture along with a live performance by Dancers Unlimited principal dancer Keala Fung and a panel discussion about the importance of dance, film and art in the indigenous environmental activists space. Screenings include the short films Vakariataka and Pō’ele Wai.
As a four-part cinematic poem, Vakariataka combines the landscape of Fiji, the contemporary style of the traditional Fijian dance meke and language, and the linkage between the body, the water, and the land.
Pō’ele Wai is a narrative short film that combines magical realism, dark fantasy and horror within a classical narrative to tell a visceral story of the effects of poisoning in a poetic homage to sacred waters.

PIFF is proud to showcase the feature film Inky Pinky Ponky in partnership with Noreetuh for an evening of culinary and cinematic delights.
Opened in 2014, Noreetuh is a modern Hawaiian restaurant located at 128 First Avenue in the East Village of New York City by Chef/Co-Owner Chung Chow. Enjoy a special pre-fixe menu at chef Chung Chow’s award-winning Modern Hawaiian restaurant Noreetuh before the screening of Inky Pinky Ponky. From Aotearoa (New Zealand), writers Amanki Prescott-Faletau and Leki Jackson Bourke bring this LGBTQ+ coming-of-age film to PIFF.

Changemakers Talk with Ioane Goodhue and Luciane Buchanan

International Cultural Arts Network (ICAN) will host Ioane Goodhue (Next Goal Wins, Chief of War, Kūkini), and Luciane Buchanan (Night Agent, Chief of War, Mother Tongue); a distinguished roster of actors from the Pacific Islands who are on the cutting edge of creative activity. Following the workshop, three films centering the rich legacy of Hawaiian storytelling will be screened for free to the public.

HŌKŪLE’A: FINDING THE LANGUAGE OF THE NAVIGATOR

In 2006, cultural anthropologist Wade Davis sailed with master navigator Nainoa Thompson to learn about the art of wayfinding. Fifteen years later the two explorers contemplate the mysteries of traditional navigation and a future inspired by the language of the navigator.
THE QUEEN’S FLOWERS

A magical take on a true story, The Queen’s Flowers is an animated short adventure for kids that follows Emma, a Native Hawaiian girl in 1915 Honolulu, as she makes a special gift for the last monarch of Hawai‘i, Queen Lili’uokalani.

In 1790 Hawai’i, an elite warrior must leave his family behind when sent on a deadly mission to report on the bloody war waged by Kamehameha against Maui. When captured by the enemy, he is miraculously saved by someone who has a message for him of their own.
